AQUAMARINE - MARCH'S MAGICAL BIRTHSTONE

For those lucky people born in March, you have one of the most beautiful birthstones!

Aquamarine's name is derived from the Latin word for seawater and at one-time ancient mariners claimed the gem would calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea.

This stunning gemstone is one of the green-blue variety of the mineral beryl.  Most Aquamarines you may see in the marketplace are a light pastel slightly greenish blue.  What gives Aquamarine it's color is the iron in the mineral crystal structure.  Emerald is the green to bluish green variety of the same mineral.

Fun Fact - as a healing stone, Aquamarine is said to be effective as a treatment for anxiety and in the Middle Ages it was thought Aquamarine would reduce the effect of poisons.

Where Do Aquamarines Come From?

Most Aquamarines are mined in Brazil.  Deposits are also found in Pakistan, Kenya, The Ural Mountains in Russia and Madagascar.  One suprising location is also Colorado USA!

What Is The Durablity of Aquamarine?

Putting this in relative terms, a diamond is known to be the hardest gem and measures 10 on the MOHs scale of hardness**.  Aquamarine measures 7.5 - 8 on the same scale.  What this means is the more durable a gems is, the more suitable it is for use in frequently worn jewellery.

** This scale identifies the level of hardness of a gem ranging from the softest at 1 which is talc to 10 which is diamond.  

Fun Fact - This March birthstone is thought to enhance the happiness of marriage!  It is also the official gemstone for the 19th wedding anniversary.

What Is The Best Way To Care For Your Aquamarine Jewellery?

Aquamarines are not recommended to be cleaned in an ultrasonic machine.  At home, care is as simple as using warm soapy water with a soft brush (to get into all the spaces creams and soaps can hide) then wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Although termed as "semi-precious", Aquamarines are to many very precious and a must for every jewellery wardrobe.
